There is no universal definition of “well-being.” Some people might feel happy or content, or for others, it may be the absence of disease. Emotional well-being and mental well-being are used to describe the same thing. They are accepted to include a state in which an individual is comfortable, healthy or happy. Still, they may consist of broader concepts such as life satisfaction, a person’s sense of purpose, and how in control they feel.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) describes mental well-being as “a state in which an individual realizes his or her abilities. Being able to cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and contribute to their community”.

Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. If our mental health is affected, it can lead to depression, insomnia, fatigue, an increase of stress levels, weight gain or loss or anxieties, to name a few.

But how to become well and energized?

Stay connected, talk to others and listen to your needs. Find ways to interact more with your friends and families, maybe a weekly family board game night or going for walks in nature. Or how about a get-together as a family and cook or do baking together? 

Be aware of yourself, remember the little things in life which gave you joy in the past. Sometimes the little things are the ones to remember. Reading an exciting book or listening to music or maybe taking a relaxing bath or talking to friends and family over the phone or invite them over for coffee.

Keep learning and exploring things; signing up for online courses can bring so much fun and allow you to explore new hobbies or interests. Joining a group or start to volunteer will create new connections with other people who share the same interests.

Stay active, go for a run or walk, ride your bike or walk your dog. Being outside and being active will boost your energy and keeps you fit.

There are so many things we can do already to become well. Well-being is so beneficial for your physical and mental health.
It can fight depression or anxieties and also helps with fatigue. Being active with your mind and body can also help with insomnia. It benefits when trying to lose weight and helps with stress management.

There is so much to win when we take care of our well-being. The most important thing is to get started!
