Living with Aliens

Do mirrors show us our real selves or a projection of what we want to see? Aliens seem to be no different.

I went for my usual stroll with my buddy animal companion at an odd twilight hour. We met a few joggers on the way, while others were speedily driving past to unwind at home after work. Everything seemed so calm and serene. Chirping birds flying high were heading toward their nest too. 

We headed to the playground, a small park nearby as Naiku dragged and led me there. I often leave him to run around making sure he is safe. The sound of the water flowing in the canal was soothing. Naiku ran around picked up a stick and barked at me to throw it around. He brought it back and so the game continued. He peeped into the overgrown dried grass near the flying fox and started barking wildly and wouldn’t stop. By now, my curiosity rushed me to see what he was looking at. I was hesitant at first whether I should touch the bag or not. He was barking at a small bag all tied up, something was wiggling, desperately wanting to come out. I looked around with no soul in sight. Sweat trickled down my spine with an icy chill up the spine and my imagination running haywire with vampires and ghost stories I had been reading.

Sceptically, I moved forward and opened the knot to see a tiny weird creature with bulging eyes and antennas stretching out. I rubbed my eyes in disbelief as he stood 8 feet tall in front of me. By this time, Naiku had his tail in and started cooing with fear. Was this a bad dream? I held Naiku’s leash and started running away from this figurine. To my surprise, he called me back and promised he wouldn’t hurt me. He said he was lonely, new to this place, and needed some friends. Naiku sniffed Robert(I christened him with this name). Robert was pushed on the floor and lay dead gripped with fear for a few seconds. The next moment he started giggling like us, being tickled by Naiku’s licks all over his face. So, we sat there chatting like long-lost friends, he cuddled Naiku, who seemed to like his new playmate.

I asked about his whereabouts and what was he doing there. Surprisingly, he trusted me and openly discussed his plans. He needed a roof to stay; however; I would have to sneak him into the house after sunset to protect him from the media and the crazy crowd. Robert was a groovy, stylish alien on a secret mission from planet X. He traveled 10,000 milky ways to reach us. Wasn’t he scared of being killed by humans? Why did he want to be friends with humans? Was he here on a humanitarian mission or to destroy our race and take innocent lives like the fanatics? I couldn’t stop the wild thoughts racing through my mind. The funky part was he carried his igloo-like dome on his back to receive signals from his peers.

Are we all not aliens somewhere deep down? Humans are so different and unique. Sometimes, I feel alienated from the society. Einstein, Edison, and the renowned scientists creating history with their discoveries were heavily criticized, rejected, and ostracized by the same society that praised and bestowed them with Nobel prizes later. However, with advancements in Science and enlightenment about the debated topics of religion, spirituality, etc; dynamic, proactive societies are emerging. A big breakthrough in eradicating the superstitions, and myths creates educated, highly evolved beings with advanced knowledge like the aliens.

Coming back to our alien friend, Robert. All of us quietly sneaked in after dark in the house. I made sure he settled down in his room. I had no idea about what the aliens eat. When asked, Robert found it weird we humans eat meat and grass(salad). He pressed the belly button and his igloo opened up like a lit-up tent. He plugged himself in and went into a deep meditative state. I was thrilled by this experience and couldn’t believe I was living with an alien and one of them had visited Earth to see us.

The next morning, Naiku woke Robert up, jumping inside his tent. Robert didn’t mind and played with his new 4 legged friend. Robert understood my plight and disguised himself like a human, a tall, handsome hunk with blue eyes. People still stared at us like a weird duo walking on the street. I wondered what would they do if they knew he was an alien. We were attracting all the stares of the world. He went and played on the slides with the kids, laughing and screaming, chasing them, and playing hide and seek just like a child. The children were happily swinging on his arms and he was busy performing tricks on demand for them. 

Robert was so innocent with a loving child-like demeanour. A different side of Robert compared to his heroic agility and quick action taken to expose a big robbery and put the criminals behind bars. I was amazed by HIS creation, basking in the beauty of the magical moments; I settled down on the bench wiping the happy tears off my face.

Then they all dropped down like fireflies from the sky. They all looked the same. They were on a mission to protect us. Were they aliens? Or was it a mere reflection of the wild, unknown, undiscovered alien self hiding within me?

We are all so different and yet the same.

I looked up at my Creator, smiled, and saluted HIM for dropping this beautiful friend  in disguise. Feeling safe and loved, I walked away with happy treasured memoirs.
