Tame Your Thoughts

“The word courage comes from the French word ‘coeur’, which means heart. True power proceeds not from force, but from love.” — Alan Cohen

Have you settled for sitting on the sidelines instead of getting in the game of life with passion, purpose, and power? Have you allowed circumstances or setbacks to frustrate you or affect your mood? Is there something holding you back from stepping into your power? If there’s one thing that excites me, it’s having the privilege of encouraging and motivating people to recognise the magnitude of power that resides within them. It is getting them to open their eyes to how they’ve allowed illusions or lack of clarity to hold them back. It is awakening within them a passionate desire to run toward their goals with great expectancy and joy.

Your mind is continually churning with thoughts, which is not a terrible thing, but if those thoughts are negative, it will affect your beliefs and actions throughout life. I’m sure you can relate to occasionally lying in bed at night trying to go to sleep, while your mind is running wild with anxious thoughts? You want to sleep, but you’re worried about this or that. It makes for an exhausted person the next day. It’s a good idea to silence your thoughts and let your heart lead your way, as your heart knows everything you really want and need for a content life. Besides, have you noticed that most of the things we worry about never happen?

Mindful meditation is a wonderful way to quiet your thoughts. In this practice, you take some time to sit still, take a few deep breaths, relax your body, and focus on your inhale and exhale. As you focus on your breathing, many of your thoughts will cease and you experience inner peace. Occasionally, a floating thought or emotion will enter your mind. This is all right. Acknowledge it and let it float away. This practice is teaching you to manage your thoughts and emotional state.

Embrace Your Feelings

“Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power.” — Lao Tzu

To step into your powerful self, learn to face and embrace your emotions. We all know that situations will come that are not optimal; there may even be trying circumstances that evoke negative feelings. What you do with these feelings is important for moving forward or staying stuck internally. Many people don’t like to feel pain, so they stuff it or try to numb it with addictions, constant activity, etc. The effects of these poor coping skills will drain energy from them over time and eventually cause an emotional breakdown.

Again, mindful meditation is a wonderful tool to learn how to embrace and process emotions. It’s all right to experience the intensity of the emotions, whether it’s sadness, grief, anger, rage, or otherwise, but then allow them passage. They may have arisen to teach you a lesson or finally deal with emotions you’ve stuffed for years. Accept what shows up and let it reveal itself through you. Like a full moon on a cloudy night, trust that behind the clouds lies the brightest light that can’t be diminished.

The ability to embrace your emotions and attend to them will help you become more powerful in various ways. You will become secure and confident, and happier and more peaceful. Some happiness experts assert the more you embrace the negative feelings, the more you experience the positive feelings. So instead of going through life feeling a little happy, you can realistically embrace and honour your negative emotions, which allow you to experience abundant and authentic joy! When you honour your feelings, you are expressing self-love by reclaiming your wholeness. You are not denying any part of you, which is stepping into your amazing power that has lived in you all along. So learn to incorporate mindful meditation daily and watch how it transforms your emotional life and helps you unleash the amazing power that resides in you.
