Thinking about what you are doing wrong? Which are the most common job hunting mistakes?

If that resounds to you, today I bring six job hunting mistakes that career changers mostly do.

Usually, when we think about changing our career and start job hunting, we are too stressed out, we already are feed up with our current job, we have been ignoring the 10 signs that show we are in the wrong career.

Don’t Panic! I’ve been there too, so I got you!

I remember when I started to be upset in my job, and I was ignoring the fact that I was frustrated, bitter, and realising I was in the wrong place. My first thought was- Okay! I will go online, update my CV, prepare a cover letter and start applying for jobs- And I did it! Wrong call!

My first mistake was to not tailor my CV for relevant job posts. At that moment, I was not an expert in career changes, and I wasn’t a certified coach, so I did not know a lot of stuff. I did what most of you are doing: make a CV describing all I’ve done instead of tailoring my CV with the relevant information for every job post I was applying for.

Then, I download a few templates of the Cover Letter online, mix and match them, and just personalised a bit. And send the same one to every job post I was applying for.

After being prepared, my not tailored resume and my downloaded mix and match Cover Letter were sent to every job posting that I find interested in or can get me out of my nightmare.

Desperation. It does ring any bell?????

I wanted to leave so bad! Not thinking it correctly; I wanted a fast result, so I prepare all the above fast and quickly crossed my finger to see if it would work. Breaking News! It did not work!

What I was missing? Why I was being ignored? Or the few that called, it did not go through?

  • I did not have a pitch! Couldn’t see me as a brand. And I wasn’t pitching/selling myself to win. And to sell my best skills or Achievements.
  • I didn’t create a plan or strategy! I just thought I want to leave my job; I’m bored to do this, so let’s plan:
        • How I will do this?
        • What tools do I already have to do this?
        • What tools I am missing to do this successfully?
  • I wasn’t highlighting my transferable skills. I just described all that I’ve done in my previous jobs, my studies, and not much more.

And the last was to not hire a career coach. When we talk about career-changing, a few people really know what they really want to do. Most of the cases (myself included) do not realise how important it is to know their purposemission, and vision, which is crucial if we want to have a career that we love, and enjoy working on it. So the help of a Career Change Coach will get us there quickly and successfully. Giving us tools and information that probably we do not know.

Career Change is a process where you will face: frustration; some moments you will be lost, other times you will need help seeing your own value. Or you will have a hard time writing that Cover Letter because your limiting beliefs will get in the middle.

How many of you did work on purpose, mission, vision for a career change? Or even think about if your values match the job posting and company that you are applying for.

All that is very important to make a career change and successfully complete it that is our ultimate goal!

A Career Change Coach can be a game-changer, doing it right and faster than doing it by yourself.
