Throughout a vast amount of research conducted regarding intimate partner violence, some studies have concluded that as many as 70% of women have experienced physical or sexual violence from a partner at some point during their lives.

This dishearteningly high percentage stands out among domestic abuse statistics, putting the issue of domestic violence in the spotlight as something to discuss openly and without shame.

Domestic violence statistics in practice.

Despite the prevalence of domestic violence across the world, it’s not always immediately apparent when it’s happening to you. What is domestic violence? Unfortunately, abuse isn’t always cut-and-dry, and signs of an abusive relationship may not be as apparent as you might think. This is exactly why we strive to bring attention to domestic violence awareness.

You may be experiencing domestic abuse or violence if:

  • Your partner often accuses you of cheating or other forms of dishonesty;
  • Keeps a close eye on your spending;
  • You feel uncomfortable talking to your partner about interactions with your friends;
  • You feel compelled to look or act a certain way for your partner;
  • Your partner frequently criticizes you, yells at you, or reprimands you.

Of course, domestic abuse can also include physical acts of aggression such as pushing, shoving, punching, slapping, or otherwise threatening harm.

Examining the effects of abuse.

While physical violence can certainly have its own negative effects, there is another side of domestic violence that can result in longstanding difficulties for the victim. Those who experience domestic abuse also frequently suffer from psychological effects including:

  • Anxiety, which can lead to more severe symptoms such as panic attacks;
  • Low self-esteem or a lack of self-identity;
  • Fear of independence or solo decision-making;
  • Depression;
  • Recurrent nightmares and sleep disturbances.

Conquering the aftermath.

It’s not uncommon for victims of domestic violence to experience feelings of profound hopelessness, but we want to take time to assure you that help is available and that recovery is possible for victims of domestic assault.

First, understand that there is no shame in asking for help.
