There’s no way around it. Breakups hurt, particularly when they lead to excruciating heartbreak, bitterness, and sometimes the temptation to commit to another relationship before you’ve had time to heal.

What’s worse is that breakups happen all the time—worldwide, individuals are in three to five long-term relationships before finding “the one”.

At times like these, it can be difficult to distract from the emotional pain and a tugging pull of loss, which is exactly why the concept of rebound relationships speaks so clearly to many people suffering from a rough breakup.

What is a rebound relationship?

What is a rebound relationship? How long does a rebound relationship last?

About 90% of rebound relationships are initiated within three months after a breakup. These relationships are often characterized by a drive to distract from the primary hurt of a breakup.

Often, rebound relationships maintain a predictable pattern—these rebound relationship stages can include:

  • Relief via Initial attraction and possible intimacy;
  • A desire to prove your own healing and independence from your previous partner;
  • Frequent comparisons of your rebound to your ex;
  • Disappointment and possibly further heartbreak.

As a result, rebound relationships don’t usually last.

Is your relationship a rebound?

Sure, rebound meaning can be a little bit subjective. Just how much time should you wait between a breakup and pursuing a new relationship? Is it truly a rebound relationship if you don’t have any remaining feelings for your ex, and just how much feeling is, well, too much?

To figure out if your relationship might be a rebound, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do I still have feelings for my ex?
  • Am I in this new relationship to prove a point to others or to myself?

If you find yourself answering “yes” to one or both of these, take a moment to assess your emotional health and well-being. When confronted with questions like these, it becomes easier to see how rebound relationships may lead to unhealthy consequences or a delay of healing.

Maintaining health and happiness post-breakup.

Thankfully, there are other ways to handle a nasty breakup that doesn’t involve unhealthy rebound relationships. One of the best methods is to seek help from an Online Life Coach who can help you to constructively confront the hurt you are feeling from your breakup and advise you about the best ways to proceed toward recovery.
