Yes, no, yes, no, yes, no...

Does this train of thought sound familiar? If so, you’re probably one of the millions of people who have difficulty making decisions.

Despite the difficulty of making decisions, it’s important that we all work diligently to become better decision-makers. Why? Because making the right decisions means that:

We can become happier in our personal lives.

We can improve our relationships.

We will see more success in our business pursuits.

We will feel more confident in our own abilities to self-direct.

If this sounds overwhelming and you’re still not feeling secure in your ability to make the right choices in life, keep reading for a few tips you can adopt right away.

Take your time.

No, this doesn’t mean that you should procrastinate! Instead, don’t rush into a decision before dedicating enough time to fully understand the decision you must make and the implications of each choice. Ask yourself how this decision might affect you and others, and consider how it could affect your future. You’ll be more likely to make a good decision if you’re well-informed.

List all of your options, plus their pros and cons.

Once you’ve gathered all the information you can, begin by making a list of each decision you could make. Then, list the pros and cons of each choice.

Some people who are making complex decisions even choose to create entire spreadsheets dedicated to this process! If you think mathematically, or if you are looking for a way to more cleanly organize your thoughts, you might consider giving the spreadsheet method a try.

Make a backup plan.

It’s hard work to make a decision, and this can lead to some serious anxiety. To feel more confident and assured in your decision, it doesn’t hurt to formulate a backup plan. Then, if things don’t work out, you’ll have an alternate choice ready to go.
