Is it a coincidence that “anger” is only a single letter short from “danger”? Not really!

In all seriousness, anger can have a massively negative impact on a person’s life, relationships, job performance, and health. Despite this, feeling angry all the time is more common than most expect. It’s estimated that around 16 million Americans are affected by one of the most extreme types of anger—intermittent explosive disorder.

Why do I get angry?

While occasional anger is completely normal and experienced by everyone, there are instances when outbursts of anger become more frequent and are more akin to out of control rage. This more consistent type of anger may be caused by a number of reasons. Some of these include:

Unresolved problems with relationships.

Hindrances to life goals.

Stress and unhappiness at work.

Underlying medical conditions.

Feeling disrespected or undervalued by peers.

Witnessing injustice in the world.

Fear of helplessness.

Not understanding how to control your emotions.

Dealing with anger.

Breathe!

Sure, it may seem simple, but breathing exercises are some of the most effective ways for people lacking anger management skills to calm their bodies and their minds. Breathe deeply with your diaphragm, hold your breath for a few moments, then exhale. Hold again, inhale, and repeat. This is called box breathing.

Go back to the source. 

Take a few steps back and spend some self-reflective moments asking yourself why you’re angry. Maybe your anger is being triggered by one of the causes listed above, or maybe you’re upset for another reason entirely. Make a plan to resolve the underlying problem.
