If your child is having trouble reading, you’re not alone! The U.S. school system is full of children struggling with reading. In fact, the National Children’s Book and Literacy Alliance has gathered statistics which emphasize the lack of reading proficiency throughout multiple age ranges. For example, the U.S. Department of Education reported in 2013 that only about one-third of fourth graders and eighth graders in the United States were reading at their grade level.

Knowing the signs

Reading difficulty can manifest in a variety of ways, meaning that it is important for parents to be actively involved in their children’s learning while keeping an eye out for tell-tale signals such as:

  • Anxiety about attending a school or completing reading homework.
  • Difficulty processing and pronouncing words.
  • Problems with related exercises such as spelling, writing, and comprehension.
  • Extra time needed to complete reading tasks

Reasons for difficulty

A number of reasons may be associated with your child’s struggle to read. Identifying the source of the problem is important, as it may affect how you help your child to overcome their reading obstacles. Kids struggling with reading may be having difficulty due to:

  • Poor instruction at school.
  • Genetic reasons (other family members have struggled with reading).
  • Hearing or vision impairment.
  • A dislike of reading.

How to help

If you’re wondering how to help a child struggling with reading, an abundance of resources exists to help you work with your child and facilitate their success.

For example, you may consider:

Providing your child with new and exciting books of interest. Make regular trips to the library a habit, and reward your child for completing their reading homework with a book of their own choosing. Providing your child with a variety of books will make reading more interesting and even fun!

Hiring an Online English Tutor to supplement class work. Online English tutoring is a flexible, convenient, and effective way to help your child further identify their weaknesses and work on an individual level to overcome them. Children can work with their Tutor from the comfort of their homes, in a low-anxiety setting.

Most importantly, remember that every child learns and develops at their own pace. We know it can be frustrating for both you and your child when reading is difficult, but by doing your part to offer compassionate assistance, you can help your child to reach and even exceed expectations. Rushing success may only further hinder your child’s confidence in their reading abilities, so have patience.
