Although it may seem like the phrase “laughter is the best medicine” is just an old saying, it is actually rooted in scientific truth. There are many benefits of laughter, including improved physical health, stronger relationships, and increased happiness.

The benefits of laughter

Increase in happiness

There are actually many scientifically proven benefits of laughter. A study published in The Journal of Neuroscience showed laughter releases endorphins in the brain, via opioid receptors, that bring feelings of happiness and make you feel good. These endorphins are also natural painkillers, so laughing can actually help ease chronic pain.

Improve relationships

The study also showed that social laughter is often contagious because when endorphins are released in a group setting, it promotes a sense of safety and togetherness. In fact, research conducted by the psychology department at UNC demonstrated that laughter is one of the signs of a healthy, happy relationship, and couples who laugh together report higher satisfaction in the relationship.

Cardiovascular health

Laughing can also have significant physical and cardiovascular benefits. It can lower your blood pressure and reduces stress hormone levels, reducing your risk of stroke and heart attack.

It is a great cardio workout that can get your heart pumping, allowing you to burn the same amount of calories as you would on a moderately paced walk. It also works your abs as it causes your stomach muscles to contract, so if you hate crunches laughter is a great option!

Boost immunity

Smiling and laughing also activates special cells called T-cells that support your immune system, helping you to fight off sickness. Doctors have found that on top of that, laughter helps you have a positive outlook on life which helps you fight disease and live longer.

How to keep laughing

As you can see, laughter is an important factor in living a happy, healthy, and long life. Have you noticed you have been unable to laugh recently? If you have been feeling depressed and have been having a hard time laughing, consider seeking the help of an Online Therapist.
