Although it may seem like the phrase “laughter is the best medicine” is just an old saying, it is actually rooted in scientific truth. There are many benefits of laughter, including improved physical health, stronger relationships, and increased happiness.
The benefits of laughter
Increase in happiness
There are actually many scientifically proven benefits of laughter. A study published in The Journal of Neuroscience showed laughter releases endorphins in the brain, via opioid receptors, that bring feelings of happiness and make you feel good. These endorphins are also natural painkillers, so laughing can actually help ease chronic pain.
Improve relationships
The study also showed that social laughter is often contagious because when endorphins are released in a group setting, it promotes a sense of safety and togetherness. In fact, research conducted by the psychology department at UNC demonstrated that laughter is one of the signs of a healthy, happy relationship, and couples who laugh together report higher satisfaction in the relationship.
