If you or your child is suffering from Halloween anxiety, you're not alone. The fear of Halloween is known as Samhainophobia and there are others that share this phobia.

The festival of Samhain was celebrated 2000 years ago. It originated with the ancient Celtic Samhain, in which people would have bonfires and wear scary costumes to ward off ghosts.

The Celtic year ended on the 1st of November and they believed that the ghosts of the dead would return to the Earth. So, on the 31st of October, Samhain was celebrated. This fact alone has scared many people.

Today, it is celebrated as Halloween and it has evolved to trick or treating, carving pumpkins, costumes, parties, etc.

In this article, we'll address the fear of Halloween night and how to overcome it. We also share articles that were written by other professionals.

What Causes Fear of Halloween (Samhainophobia)

The exact cause of this is unknown. According to Very Well Mind, previous incidents and genetics could play a role in this fear.

In all honesty, for children, the sight of fake blood, frightening objects and spooky costumes can lead to them having fear of this festival. The worst part of it is that sometimes, this fear never leaves and occurs even in adulthood.

Often at times, at Halloween parties, people tend to scare each other, which then increases the fear.

Some people's phobias are also more specific, such as zombies, vampires, masks, tombstones, darkness, witches, etc, according to Very Well Mind.

Understand the Cause

It's important to understand the root cause of your or your child's fear of Halloween. Some points to address:

  • Does the origin of Halloween scare you?
  • Did something traumatic happen on a previous Halloween night?
  • Are you afraid of scary themes?
  • Is your fear not related to Halloween but being around others?

These are just a few of the possible reasons. A professional can help you to address and discover the cause should it be something else.

Remember Nothing is Real

For people who have Samhainophobia, it is difficult to ignore what's happening around them However, you need to remind yourself that none of this is real.

If your child is also scared, you should also emphasize and reassure him that there is nothing to be afraid of.

Choose Other Ways to Celebrate Halloween

There is no need or any pressure to join in on festivities that make you fearful or anxious. If needed, you can skip them and plan your celebration.

You can plan your own party at your home, decorate and prepare in a way that won't make you feel anxious. This would also be more beneficial if you have a child that's suffering from Halloween anxiety.

Search online for exciting Halloween party ideas and invite your loved ones over to make it more memorable.

There are also Halloween alternatives to trick and treating - if this is something you don't want to do.
