Advice for new parents with twins

Set a routine

Set a routine

This might sound impossible to do. However, you can start by doing little things to get both of your babies into a routine. For example, when one wakes up, get the other one up, when you feed one, then feed the other, etc.

If breastfeeding isn't working out…

Breastfeeding doesn't always work out, especially for moms of twins and this is okay! Switch to bottle feeding your babies and it might even be easier with twins.

Get help

Get help

There is nothing wrong with reaching out for help. After all, one baby is a handful and two on the hand means double the work. So, it'll be beneficial for your sanity to have help, especially in the first few months of your babies lives.

So whether you are delegating with your partner, hiring a babysitter, or asking a family member for some help. Do whichever option works for you.

Have patience

Having one baby requires patience. So, can you imagine how much more patience and tolerance you'll need to have with twins! Know that in time, it will get easier and that watching your children grow will be beautiful to watch.

Get double carriers, prams, strollers, etc

You'll obviously need two of everything. When you're busy around your home, you can wear a double carrier while you're getting things done around the house. When you're going out, it would be best to invest in a double pram or stroller so that you don't have to carry them.

Simplify meals

Simplify meals

One of the best pieces of advice for any parent is to make easy meals. It would be difficult to spend hours on end in the kitchen preparing for dinner. Therefore, simplify them and there are so many ways to do it! You can buy food or get pre-prepared meals that you can just heat up. Alternatively, you can look for quick and healthy recipes that you can prepare and also cook within half an hour.

Split your time and get to know both children

When you have one baby, you'll learn their patterns, personalities, etc. Now, with twins, it can be a little more difficult. So, instead of attending to one child only and your partner attends to the other, you should both swap. This way, you can both bond with both your babies and get to know them better. After all, they are both individuals and will likely have different personalities, interests, etc as they grow.

Phases and milestones

Your children will go through the same phases and milestones simultaneously. This means teething, crawling, walking, potty training, etc. This will be another challenging stage for you as a parent. Or one child might learn to do something faster than the other.

Whatever struggles you're facing, just know that it's just a phase and a short-term problem, it's not here to stay. So embrace it and get through.

Don't listen to others and compare yourself

Nearly every parent under the sun has someone or the other constantly giving their comments and trying to control. So, be prepared for this to happen and remember you are doing the very best you can. Also, do not compare yourself to other parents without twins. You have to deal with double the challenges that they've had.
