“I hate myself!” “I hate my life!” “I don’t like myself.” Do those phrases sound familiar? Perhaps they take up a lot of space in your head, tainting your inner thoughts with self-loathing. If this is the case, you are one of a large group of people worldwide who struggles with self-hate.
While it’s possible for any type of person to experience self-hatred, studies analyzing the way that millennials would describe themselves indicate that this generation is full of self-loathing.
Earlier this year, the UK’s National Health Service reported a doubling of hospitalizations due to self-harm in the past ten years. Adolescent girls also tend to experience overwhelming self-hatred more than other groups, with as many as seven out of ten girls thinking that they’re not good enough.
