Remember when you were a child and you were really engaged in a game, its usually more intense when you are on your own because your totally present in the process.
Harnessing creativity regardless of your artistic ability, encourages being present in the moment. We tend to get out of our own way, and this has the effect of assisting our health also. We slow down, our bodies slow down. There is no rushing or time frame for the action.
I love to draw but I do not consider myself an artist. Underlying the action of putting pencil to paper is the act of being present in the moment, slowing down to concentrate on what I am doing. I am engaging in the act of moving a pencil across the page and being OK with the outcome because its just for me. This is not something I am trying to achieve for an outcome. It is purely a pursuit for pleasure.
Studies and research have shown that creativity is protective of health as it draws on a variety of neural networks within the brain. The creation of art has been shown to decrease anxiety and stress, negative emotions and can improve medical outcomes. Basically, being creative can help you live longer.
What if you are not into art? There are many forms to being creative. Here are a few suggestions:
Ø Gardening and placement of plants/garden statues etc.
Ø Placement of items within your home
Ø Cooking by using instinct instead of following a recipe directly.
Ø Undertaking any water activities
Ø Going for a bushwalk
Ø The quest for knowledge, reading, listening to podcasts/talks.
Ø The way you present yourself to the world (clothing)
You may be pleasantly surprised to find that you are already engaging in these pursuits. The very act of your awareness of this can take some of the pressure off life and help engage the brain in relaxation.
A situation that requires a solution can be approached in a variety of ways. There is no single way fix to a problem. By being creative you open new horizons that can deliver many benefits.
In a way, creativity is a never-ending learning process. From learning, you gain untold benefits, which you can use in real life situations.
Erich Fromm spelled it out clearly, “The conditions for creativity are: to be puzzled, to concentrate, to accept conflict and tension, to be born everyday, and to feel a sense of self.”
