Diwali (or Deepavali in Sanskrit) actually signifies "a column of lights". This five-day celebration, which is the greatest in India, praises the triumph of good over fiendishness and splendor over dimness. In North India, it praises the arrival of Lord Ram and his significant other Sita to their realm of Ayodhya, following Ram's and monkey god Hanuman's thrashing of devil Ravan and salvage of Sita from his underhanded grips (on Dussehra). In South India, the celebration is identified with the destruction of devil Narakasura. It's a one-day festivity known as Deepavali.
