You are the Most Powerful Person I know. Trust me, I’ve met quite a few. I am amazed at what you can do every day. You have the capability of creating something out of nothing. You can create life, heal others, and take life away. As the bible says, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:21, NIV) You have the power to create, destroy, or do nothing. You are adaptable, creative, strong, and can achieve anything you want to – or not. It's all up to you.

Your hands are the tools that act on your words. When angry, you talk in a louder, harder, and more aggressive tone and you press harder, or tighten your grip, or tense up in some way. When you are consoling, your speech is softer, gentler, and so is your touch. So what you think and feel is conveyed through your actions. But that’s just the beginning. Scientists are realizing there are certain health benefits that can be received from touch. The physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits from touch, which we all have the capability of releasing and receiving, are enormous. Here is a few benefits touch provides, and ways to boost your mind body and spirit:

Touch heals physically. Something as simple as a pleasant massage can provide amazing benefits. Tiffany Field, Ph.D. and founder of the Touch Research Institute since 1992, found that when premature babies are massaged 2 times per day for 10 days, they gain 47% more weight, and are released from the hospital an average of 6 days earlier than other premature babies who do not receive that same treatment. In adults, it can help decrease cortisol, which is the body’s main stress hormone. Cortisol has varied effects on the body’s normal processes, ranging from blood pressure and blood sugar regulation to managing the way in which the body processes the foods you eat. It also works with the brain to balance moods, motivation, and feelings of fear or anxiety. When left untreated over a long period of time, excess cortisol can cause an increased risk for cardiovascular disease and can produce certain “classic” signs of weight gain around the midsection, for example.  Physical touch increases levels of dopamine and serotonin, which help regulate your mood, relieve stress and reduce blood pressure, and counterbalance the long-term effects of cortisol. Dopamine is an important regulator of blood pressure and also regulates the cardiovascular centers that control the functions of the heart, arteries and veins. Lack of efficient dopamine production can cause high blood pressure.  Dopamine also activates your brain’s reward center, which response by releasing the chemical.  This release causes your brain to focus more of its attention on the experience. As a result, you’re left with a strong memory of the pleasure you felt. This strong memory can prompt you to make an effort to experience that pleasure over and over again. Serotonin helps regulate the digestive system in our bodies, and in addition, helps to regulate the sleep-wake cycle, metabolism and appetite, and hormonal activity, just to name a few other benefits. So massage is a great way to lower stress, blood pressure, and keep yourself in balance.

Touch creates emotions, such as compassion, love, reassurance, empathy, comfort, to name a few. When we touch others in a way that signals this, it creates an understanding, trust and a bond. It makes us feel connected, not only physically but emotionally and psychologically, which boosts our overall well-being. We know for babies that skin-to-skin contact is essential for physical and psychological development. Research published in the journal Biological Psychiatry shows the benefits of human touch as a newborn are measurable even 10 years after birth. In this study, 73 premature babies were given maternal skin-to-skin contact and were compared to 73 babies who received incubator care. After repeated testing, from ages 6 months to 10 years, those in the skin-to-skin group were found to have greater cognitive skills. At 10 years of age, these children also had better sleep patterns, physical responses to stress, more advanced autonomic nervous systems and better cognitive control. The most effective way to provide this support is through hugging. Hug often and frequently.

Touch is miraculous. There are certain Christian denominations that practice the spiritual power of laying hands on an individual and praying over them. This is used in conjunction with a prayer to bless them for whatever venture they may be going into, or pray for healing over a certain affliction, or pray over them during a difficult time to bring peace and comfort. We are at our natural spiritual creatures that have a deep connection to God, and our bodies are for the most part a conduit that channels God's spirit to flow through us and out of us to others. We receive it and give it away to strengthen and support others, and in the process, we become strengthened as well. Iron sharpens iron. I have witnessed firsthand the miraculous effects of what laying hands on another and praying over them can do.

The benefits of touch are many. I have just scratched the surface on how important it is. And one of the best ways to activate touch is to get and give a massage. It’s not as difficult as it sounds. Other ways to activate the benefits of touch can include hugging or even a friendly touch on the shoulder or pat on the back. And if you feel courageous enough, pray over someone. Acknowledging their burdens and supporting them is the most powerful action you can take to help someone in need.
