Trust is having a firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something, or assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something.

When you think about that, having trust in someone or something sounds pretty certain doesn't it?

But how easy is it to build trust?

A politician makes a campaign promise and we trust him or her to follow through until we find that person is indicted for some kind of crime. A financial guru has billions of clients’ assets invested because they trust that advisor to make good decisions, only to find the accounts were fake. We trust in universities, doctors, and even churches that promise to keep our children safe and healthy only to find years later about the abuse that was covered up, and we are shocked about how that could happen.

It seems that trust can be easily established,  but when broken, can lead to devastating consequences when we trust in something or someone. But isn't that what happens when we put our trust in something or someone that doesn't last? People can lose their own way, change their minds, or even die. Institutions can change policies, which affect our trust in them and then becomes difficult to trust again.

Is it any wonder then, when our earthly trust is broken, we lose trust in God, and not only lose trust in God but blame Him when we didn't trust in Him in the first place? We say we trust God, even the Federal Government trusts in God. It says so right on our money. But do we really?

Do we trust in God when we say “I trust you God, but there's this thing over here I gotta go do? Be with me, Lord.”  Who's running the show? Do we trust in God when we work to keep everything we worked for because it's ours and we earned it? Where did it come from originally?

Trusting in God means having a firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of God. That's pretty certain.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” That seems pretty certain too.

So if we know we can trust in God (head), why is it difficult to trust in God (heart)? Because it is counterintuitive to trust in something we can't see. If we can't see it, it must not exist.

It's difficult to trust in something that is one-sided, where we don't have to do anything but say yes I believe. It seems too easy. It seems too good to be true.

So when Jeremiah 29:11 says “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future,” we say, alright, what's the catch? What do I have to do?”

Trust. That's all. A little bit of faith and trust can begin to crack the hard shell we've put around us for all the failures and let-downs and disappointments we've experienced in our lives that have hardened our hearts and destroyed our joy.  And when we experience God's work, we begin to trust more, because we can see, feel, and touch what God has done in our lives.

I know this from personal experience. I trusted in God. Except when things didn't go my way. I had to fix my marriage, my finances, my “fill in the blank” when it wasn't working. I was leaning on my own understanding, not God's. Those are the times for me I found it hard to trust. I was upset at God because things weren't going the way I intended.

Then I experienced God whispering in my ear to trust. I started coming around trusting more. And when you start trusting, grace begins to pour in. And the more you trust, the easier life becomes. You will still have issues, as James 1:2-4 says, “Count it all joy my brothers,  when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be  perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

It's not that we won't have issues, it's who's at the helm to lead you through those issues. Who or what you trust in can make all the difference. Most of us have to see to believe. But when you believe first and trust, then you will see much more.

The first step to trust is to walk with others that have been where you are. Whatever season you may be in right now, whatever path you may be on, someone has been there and can help walk you through to the other side. Nothing on this earth lasts forever.
